Scholastic Bowl

I was asked at my school activities fair what the best book I’d read all year was. I did not learn until I hesitantly replied that I had been reading a lot of classics, such as Jane Austen, that this was a cruel trick on the part of the Scholastic Bowl coach to show me how immensely inferior I was to his team.

Essentially, he rattled off questions about Jane Austen books and an Austen buff destroyed me utterly. See, it was more around Christmastime that I read three Austen novels in a row, and, even then, they kind of blurred together a bit, an effect that, I believe, was catalyzed by the sugar haze I was in from all the candy I had ingested. It was taking me a few minutes to consider each question, which, I swiftly learned, was more than I had.

So, from this experience, I learned a few things:

1. Jane Austen did not write the best book I’ve read this year.

2. I am joining Scholastic Bowl to reclaim my wounded pride after having been so utterly destroyed.

3. I should, in the future, answer that Let’s Pretend This Never Happened or The Night Circus were the best books I’ve read. Ask me what was magical about the magic squirrel? Got it. Ask me about the Pool of Tears in the Circus? Bring it. (Also, that bit just now was basically my way of saying that you must read those books or you will never know what I’m talking about. And trust me, you want to know.)

See? This was actually a really sneaky, really vague book recommendation. I neglected to do a full review of the Night Circus because I’m not sure I could explain it if I tried. You really just to read it.
